About Advocacy

By John Papa

When I first saw this month’s topic it was hard for me to say anything. However as I read more into the wikipedia page I realized that I could relate to the topic more than I had thought. It’s hard for people to change other’s minds however people still try. To successfully convey feelings or ideas takes a large amount of charisma, and even more so courage. Great speakers could talk all day and gather the attention of a whole audience, and even better the whole world. In J. Robert Oppenheimer’s speech “I am become death” he changes the outlook on the creation of the nuclear bomb, and gives insight on how he feels about it. Now how do these people generate these feelings? How can something that seems to be natural talent get emulated? It was simple and in front of everyone the whole time. There were no long words. There were no complex ideas. The clear information was clear cut. It is the raw information presented without unnecessary things. The greatest speakers connect to everyone because they speak to everyone. The difference between the average speaker, and the greatest is the way they speak. An average speaker would speak for themselves. However great speakers would speak for humanity as a whole unifying them under common words, changing their views not by changing the few, but all. The key to their success was merely drawing out emotions by saying it in the simplest way possible. If everyone understood each other it would be convenient, society in general would be better, however few try. Rather than getting people to change, just say it in a way they are forced to change. Make it so simple that it makes people confront the truth.
