Birthright: Why I Write

By Joshua Wolterman

Why do I write… I write because writing is creating. Writing is the manipulation of our surroundings, of our minds and thoughts. I write to conjure physical manifestations of my inner world. I write because it is my race’s greatest power, to work magic, to create. I write because writing is power, it is our ability to manipulate the energies around us and channel them through our pen. I write because I can do anything with it. Hollywood’s wizards can lob bolts of fire and blast lighting from their palms, and while such magic may be beyond our race, for now, we have our own arcane spells. I can write a sad poem, a happy poem, a story of love, or a story of action and my writing will evoke a response. Just as a fireball can burn a man’s flesh; I can burn their soul with a fiery speech. Writings are meant to make the audience feel and manipulate emotion to create a response, as does a witch’s curse or a monk’s chant. I can cast a curse or a blessing with just my pen. I can write a letter with evidence, cause a man to spend ten years in jail, or I can write a jury and convince them to spare the man. I can manipulate a person’s emotions to inspire or demoralize. I can write a letter breaking up with my boyfriend or I can write a letter to a gay teen being bullied about how it gets better. I write because I have power over others and I have the power to affect my world. I mentioned before how we can make gods but we can also make worlds. J.R.R tolken made one in an instant when he thought of and recorded his Middle Earth. He made a world with races and languages; he made a world with kingdoms and empires. Tolkien showed us that our mind, when channeled through pen, or with wand, can create complex and elaborate things. An author can also make genocide and destroy worlds in a few moments all with writing. Tolkien ended the elves as quickly as he made them all with a pen. I write into being cataclysms and destruction. I am a god with my writing. I write because I can form countless worlds, I can conjure up gods, and I can battle or aid humankind. With writing, I have power overwhelming; with my gift I have an endless reservoir of powerful creative energy. Science can only take you so far in discovery till you reach the end of this physical realm; math can only analyze the complexity of this world. History can only analyze what we know and dig up old knowledge. I write because I can discover new realms I write to analyze maddening and impossible sequences of ley lines. I write to research forbidden knowledge and to unlock the full potential of man. I write because our race is the highest born with the most opportunities and the most power. So no matter what type of magic (writing) you practice, whether you curse or bless, destroy or create, I encourage all of you to write and to practice your birth right.
